Frequently Asked QuestionsWhy purchase a UK Builders Academy Code of Conduct?The UK builder's academy Code of Conduct is a document you can purchase from that has more than one function. It acts as a checklist when you need to hire a builder or service. It provides evidence and acts as deterent against cowboy/rogue builders. If they can't produce the right documentation and wont sign the code of conduct, don't hire them. What will I need a UK Builders Academy Code of Conduct for if I don't intend to have building work done?This is ideal to keep at home until you need it. You never know when you might need construction work. You may need to hire someone fast and by producing this document, you will know instantly if they are a legitimate company. This will also deter the door canvassers. Occasionally someone will knock at the door with the classic line 'I'm on a job up the road and have some spare materials left over and can do your driveway at a bargain price'. They will certainly not sign this document. What does retention mean?Retention is a building term. It is a type of builder's guarantee. When a job is completed you pay them the total amount less 10%, you retain the 10% until 3 months have passed. During the 3 months you must check the work to ensure it's to your satisfaction. If after the 3 months the work is still in a sound condition you pay the rest. How long does the agreement last?If the work is done to a satisfactory standard you should keep the document for the duration of the stated builders guarantee. We suggest you retain the document for at least 12 months after the completion date. Why should I register the document with the UKBA?We recommend that you register the form with us; it will cost nothing to do. If you have a problem with the work/builder and you need to seek legal advice then we have an original copy. This will deter anyone from making there own illegal alterations/additions to the form after the agreement was signed. What will you do with the Information gathered?All information gathered will be kept in the strictest confidence and we guarantee the information gathered will be kept secure. We will however utilise the information gathered of the Builder, type and cost to help us keep a database on the construction industry. What if the work goes wrong?If the work goes wrong and you fail to resolve the matter then you have a written agreement that will stand in a court of law. We have a separate copy of the form so no illegal alterations can be made after the agreement was registered with us. |
